It was no secret that Antoine Griezmann would’ve likely ended up at Old Trafford if not for Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban this summer. And along with missing out on some heavy business with the Frenchman’s sale, the Spanish giants failed to seal any incoming transfers either.

However, that is about to change with Atleti set to make a return to the transfer market, and they have identified Manchester United star Ander Herrera as one of their prime targets for the January window.

According to AS’ (via Sport Witness), the Spaniard “is one of the club’s objectives” going into the second half of the season.

The Spanish newspaper also add: ‘The agreement would be close to closing, AS has been able to find out. Simeone would have said yes and the player too.’

Herrera was a vital cog of United’s success last season, though it was one that had hints of mediocrity. The Spanish international won the Europa League, the EFL Cup, and the Community Shield last season, and was awarded the club’s player of the season award for his instrumental role in it.

Unfortunately, the talented midfielder has failed to replicate his previous campaign’s performances in the ongoing season, and he is even rumoured to be stalling a contract extension with the Red Devils at the moment.

Though this situation offers Diego Simeone’s side the perfect environment to make an attempt at luring the former Athletic Bilbao man back to La Liga, the Premier League giants seem to have no intention of letting him go. The absence of Paul Pogba has found refuge in Herrera’s name, and Jose Mourinho will probably make sure he stays in case injuries strike again.

Nevertheless, with Nemanja Matic added to a squad that already possessed the likes of Pogba, Michael Carrick, and Marouane Fellaini, competition for the midfield spot may seem too competitive for the 28-year-old, and he could easily end up snatching the opportunity to move to the Wanda Metropolitano.
