Jose Mourinho has dictated the officials to trigger the 12-month extension clause in Ander Herrera’s contract, chiefly for snubbing any interests from other clubs, particularly Atletico Madrid.
Manchester United have an alternative to extending the previously approved four-year deal by the midfielder when he put pen to paper for the Old Trafford outfit following a £28 million move from Athletic Bilbao back in 2014.
According to a few reports, the club hadn’t given the extension of the player’s contract much thought, as they planned to arrange a fresh deal for the Spaniard.
However, as per Metro, Atletico Madrid had noted that the Red Devils’ talks with the talented midfielder weren’t getting anywhere, and accordingly deemed themselves free to secure a pre-contract agreement with the United man in January.

Nevertheless, it seems the English giants are not favouring his move to the Spanish capital, as the Portuguese tactician is looking to fasten the player to England, ergo holding El Atleti at bay.

Regardless, the former Athletic Bilbao man has showcased no indications of interest in leaving the Red Devils any soon. The tenacious midfielder has featured in nine out of the eleven Premier League games for the Old Trafford outfit this season, which underlines his significance to Mourinho.
Having received enough match time, the player is evidently content with his life in Manchester, which is why a move to La Liga barely has any chance of materialisation, especially with United also set to trigger his contract extension soon.
