Manchester United are yet to contact RB Leipzig’s head of recruitment Paul Mitchell, who has been linked with the director of football role at the Old Trafford club.

The Red Devils had a terrible summer transfer window, which has led to their downfall in the Premier League this season. Jose Mourinho was keen to add a central defender, but Ed Woodward wasn’t ready to grant the funds for the likes of Toby Alderweireld or Harry Maguire.

The effects of their poor business have been evident on the pitch, which is why United have decided to bring in a director of football to monitor the club’s transfer activity, as the Glazers look to restructure the footballing operations in the coming years.

A number of candidates have emerged over the past few months, with Manchester-born Paul Mitchell getting heavily linked with the job. The 37-year-old could come into the club to help Ed Woodward, who has disappointed Mourinho on multiple occasions this season.

Paul Mitchell revealed that he is flattered by the rumours, and is enjoying the prospect of joining the biggest club in Europe. However, he also insisted that there has been no contact from Manchester United yet.

“There hasn’t been any contact with United at this moment,” Mitchell said (via MEN). “For me, it’s always about focusing on the job in hand. I’m more than aware I work for a great organisation, but then like always you never know in football what can happen in the future.

Manchester United are recognised for being one of the biggest clubs in the world. So any link with a club of that size, history and status is very flattering and I am a Manchester boy.”

It is unlikely that Mitchell would join the club soon, as Manchester United officials are willing to take some time before making the final call.

In the meantime, Jose Mourinho continues to look for a defensive recruit for the January window, and it will be interesting to see if Woodward decides to shell out some cash and deliver on the gaffer’s targets once the transfer window opens.
