Paulinho’s stint at Barcelona has come to an end after just one season at the club.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder had joined the Catalan giants in 2017, but is now going back to the Chinese Super League.

Paulinho, who made a serious impact for Barca in the 2017-18 season, is heading out on loan to Guangzhou Evergrande. He is rejoining the club, with both teams confirming the same through their official accounts.

Paulinho played 34 games and scored nine goals for La Liga champions, and also won the Copa del Rey. The Brazilian also started each of the five matches at the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2018, as his side bowed out in the quarters after a loss against Belgium.

Earlier, he had made 63 league appearances for Guangzhou Evergrande from 2015-2017. Meanwhile, Barca also confirmed that the Chinese club have an option to make the loan deal permanent.

“FC Barcelona and Guangzhou Evergrande have reached an agreement for the loan transfer of Paulinho Bezerra for one season, with a subsequent purchase option for the Chinese club,” a statement on Barcelona‘s website read.

This comes as a bit of shock to fans, who were impressed by his impact for the Spanish club in a key midfield role. Legend Andres Iniesta too, departed the club at the end of the 2017-18 season.

Now, the Catalans will undoubtedly look into the summer transfer market in order to bolster their midfield options.

Paulinho has helped Guangzhou to three consecutive league titles and an Asian Champions League crown during his previous spell in China.
