There have been some incredible moments in the long history of the FIFA World Cup, and the tournament has often given us memories that will last a lifetime.

When you think of glorious World Cup moments, you think of Diego Maradona’s stunning goal against England at the 1986 tournament, or his ‘hand of god’ in the same game, or even Zinedine Zidane’s headbutt and subsequent red card in the 2006 final.

But here’s one that probably tops the lot. This moment comes to us from the Group B encounter between Spain and Iran, with the Spaniards already a goal up and looking on course to win the game.

In the dying embers of the battle, Iran received a throw-in near the opposition area, and one Milad Mohammadi stepped up to take it.

The Iranian kissed the ball, proceeded to take a run-up and then hilariously attempted a somersault, aimed at using his momentum to throw the ball with more force. However, before he released the ball, he pulled out of the maneuver, leading many to wonder what might have been.

It was a sensational course of events, and one that should stick in the memory of all those who watched the game, because it’s a feat never attempted at a stage so big.

And while he didn’t go through with it, Mohammadi gave a unique taste to football fans on how a throw-in can actually be taken.

While this moment may be considered a ‘fail’ by many, there was nothing failure-like about Iran’s performance against Spain, with the Asian side defending astutely for much of the match, only going down to an unlucky goal and having one of their own disallowed by VAR.

Whether Iran go through to the next stage or not, one thing is for sure: They’ve given us a World Cup moment to remember for the ages.
