Ander Herrera has revealed that David de Gea doesn’t just play like the best goalkeeper in the world, he has the confidence to match his ability too.
The De Gea of today is a stark contrast to the scrawny 20-year-old that first arrived on English shores, and his transformation into the best goalkeeper in the world has been nothing short of remarkable.
Back in 2011, he arrived at Old Trafford almost as if he were a boy who lost his parents in the local supermarket. He could not speak a word of English, and after the first few games, he seemed well out of his depth. He could not deal with the physicality of the opposition players, and especially struggled with crosses.
However, Sir Alex Ferguson continued to believe in him and that faith has paid off in leaps and bounds.

The 27-year-old is now widely acclaimed as the best goalkeeper in the world, and he exuberates the confidence that was drilled into him by the legendary United boss and Eric Steele both on and off the pitch.

According to Ander Herrera, that self-belief spreads throughout the entire squad and serves as a reassuring reminder that they can rely on him if things aren’t going their way in a game.
“Before games, I’m a bit crazy,” Herrera reveals. “I get tense, I shake, dance.
“David pats me on the back, shrugs and says, ‘No, Ander, stand still, don’t worry, it can’t go wrong. If they shoot, they cannot score because I’m in goal’. It’s like nothing has happened.
“In the FA Cup semi-final against Everton in 2016, he saved a penalty from Romelu Lukaku and after the game he’s just like, “OK, that happened. What do you want to do tomorrow?” It’s like a student handing in an assignment and moving on. This is greatness.”
